Biography
Mr Emad AlJaaly is a seasoned consultant cardiac surgeon at Imperial, based at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, in the Hammersmith Hospital, who specialises in minimally invasive procedures. With over two decades’ experience in the United Kingdom and more than a decade internationally, he is a highly skilled surgeon and a pioneer in the field of cardiac surgery.
As a medical student, Mr AlJaaly was consistently a top performer and honed his skills in surgical training across multiple countries. In 2014, he secured the only prestigious Cardiothoracic Surgery Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) post, part of the National Training Number (NTN) in the United Kingdom. In addition to his clinical commitments, Mr AlJaaly is a committed researcher, conducting impactful research in the field of cardiac surgery. In recognition of his research achievements, he was awarded a PhD from Imperial College London in 2019.
Mr AlJaaly is dedicated to personal development, this was evident as completing his national training program, obtaining Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons FRCS (CTh), and being granted the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2020. He worked a year post-CCT in advanced aortic Fellowship, where he gained enormous skill set in complex aortic work. He was then appointed to a locum consultant position at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in October 2021, before his final substantive appointment at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in October 2022.
Clinical interests
• Minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
• Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), including OPCAB, MIDCAB, and total arterial CABG.
• Minimally invasive valve procedures, including aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement.
• Complex aortic procedures, including type A aortic dissection repair, aortic root replacement, and total arch replacement.
Leadership and innovation
Mr AlJaaly’s journey to become a heart surgeon spanned across several countries, each with its own linguistic, cultural, and logistic challenges. Embracing the challenges posed by diverse healthcare systems, this gave him the opportunity to develop solid management and leadership skills. Moreover, he is an expert in medical innovation, digital health, healthcare redesign, networking, and social medial technology with proved leadership in various technology designs and innovations.
Research and collaboration
Mr AlJaaly is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the National Heart and Lung Institute, part of Imperial College London and is the lead for cardiothoracic research at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He has a strong background on translational research from the design phase to planning and execution of research studies. He is open and keen on research collaboration with local and international organisations as well as with industry.

On a personal note, Mr. AlJaaly’s global experiences have made him a flexible and adaptable character, with a deep respect for diverse cultures and beliefs. He firmly believes that respect is the cornerstone for communication needed to excel as a cardiac surgeon, and he upholds high moral and ethical standards.
